Dog bite injury results in compensation

The UK has witnessed a significant increase in the number of dog bite incidents and compensation claims being awarded from these. If you’ve been attacked by a dog then you could be entitled to make a dog bite compensation claim against the owner or the person in control of the dog at the time of the incident. This was the case for Ms. Akhtar who was attacked near her home in Huddersfield.

In one case, a Ms. Akhtar was out for a walk when without any provocation a passing dog started to snarl, bark and jump up at the pram she was pushing. Ms. Akhtar bent down to protect her baby and was bitten on the face. The dog, which was an illegal pit bull terrier, would not let go. Witnesses described the attack as brutal.

After the emergency services had arrived at the scene, a police search was launched for the dogs owners. Two men were arrested and charged with breach of the Dangerous Dogs act.

Ms. Akhtar underwent emergency plastic surgery at the Bradford Royal infirmary but as a result of the brutal attack she will suffer trauma and scarring.
In a recent criminal trial the dog’s owner Wiqas Mahmud, 29, of Lockwood, was spared jail but was ordered by magistrates to do 240 hours unpaid work and pay £750 compensation to Ms. Akhtar.

This may seem like a very small sum, but it is important to note that this was a criminal prosecution of the dog’s owner. The presiding magistrate, Mr Paul Hollingdale, added that the sentence did not prevent Ms. Akhtar from seeking compensation through civil action.
