Fractured Wrist Compensation Claim pays out £20,000

A factory worker from South Wales has succesfully made a fractured wrist compensation claim and has received an award of £20,000 for his injuries and loss of earnings.

Brent Songhurst, from Bridgend, had to take 22 weeks off work when he slipped on powder at medical instrument manufacturer Biomet in the town. The factory worker was forced to take a six month break from work after the fall left him seriously injured.

Mr Songhurst, from Bridgend, was left with a fractured wrist and severe shoulder pain after slipping on dust created by shot blasting. The incident took place at the factory of medical instruments manufacturer, Biomet UK Ltd. Mr Songhurst was unloading a barrel of acid outside a blasting room when he lost his footing on the debris that had come from the cleaning of blast machinery.
Mr Songhurst, a laser etcher for the manufacturer, required surgery on his left wrist and was signed off work for 22 weeks.

Biomet were unwilling to admit liability but agreed to settle an out of court compensation claim for £20,000. Biomet have also changed working procedures to ensure the area outside the blasting room is kept safe.
